MANILA - Is Speaker Sonny Belmonte eyeing a possible senatorial bid in 2016?
Belmonte, a former mayor of Quezon City, declined to answer rumors of a possible senatorial run. What he did debunk are rumors that he will join the presidential race in the next election.
The Speaker said he is amused by the rumors of his possible presidential bid since he is not even interested in the position.
He said he was surprised that his name cropped up in the list of possible presidential candidates of the Liberal Party in 2016.
Aside from Belmonte, the other names being considered by the LP are Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas, Transportation and Communications Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya, Senate President Franklin Drilon and Camarines Sur 3rd District Rep. Maria Leonor "Leni" Robredo.
Eastern Samar Rep. Ben Evardone, a spokesman of the LP, was the first to say that the party is considering Belmonte as a possible presidential candidate.
Belmonte, however, said he did not know that he was being considered by the LP. He said the matter has not been discussed in the party. Report by Jon Ibanez, radio DZMM
