MANILA -- National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Deputy Directors Reynaldo Esmeralda and Ruel Lasala, who have been replaced by new presidential appointees incoming Deputy Directors Ricardo Pangan Jr. and Antonio Pagatpat, are now deemed removed from the NBI.
"They're (Esmeralda, Lasala) deemed removed. They were appointed as Acting Director III and they have no CESO eligibility. And, as presidential appointees, they serve at the pleasure of the President as appointing authority," Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said.
De Lima had previously asked deputy directors of the bureau to tender their courtesy resignation immediately after the resignation of former NBI Director Nonnatus Rojas.
De Lima then said at least 2 deputy directors should step down due to rumors they are linked to questionable activities.
While the justice chief said then that there was no evidence against the two unnamed deputy directors, Esmeralda and Lasala sought audience with her after having felt alluded to.
Only Esmeralda and Lasala have been replaced as deputy directors of the bureau since Deputy Director Rickson Chiong has retired.
