MANILA - “The Octobers of my life” was how papabili and Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle described the special events in his life.
In a report from CBCP News, Tagle himself noted these special events all happened in the month of October.
Tagle said it all began on the eve of Our Lady of Pillar’s feast day on Oct. 11, 2001 when a mystical smell of roses filled the church in Cavite where he would celebrate mass the following day.
Many around him suddenly felt afraid, but he calmly entered the cathedral and told the people “not to be scared because the mother of the covenant is with us.”
He said: “I never thought that it will be the beginning of the many Octobers in one’s life.”
Six days after or on Oct. 17, 2001, he was informed of his appointment as bishop of the Diocese of Imus. It was announced in Rome five days later.
On Oct. 7, 2011, Tagle was told of his appointment as Archbishop of Manila. Retired Pope Benedict XVI himself formally announced the appointment at the Vatican on Oct. 13, 2011.
Ten days after or on October 23 while at the Synod of Bishops on New Evangelization in Rome, Tagle was made cardinal.
Tagle will join the papal conclave in Vatican for the replacement of Pope Benedict XVI, which announced his resignation due to failing health. The conclave is specifically set on March 12, not October.
