MANILA – Malacanang respects the plan of Senator Alan Peter Cayetano to seek the presidency in 2016.
Communications Secretary Sonny Coloma stressed it is Cayetano's right to make a declaration.
Asked if Cayetano is even being considered for endorsement by President Aquino, Coloma said, "With 848 days remaining until the end of the President's term on 30 June 2016, the administration is intensely focused on implementing the vital reform programs underpinning the Philippine Development Plan. Declaration of candidacy is the prerogative of those qualified to seek public office. This is not part of the administration's current work program."
He said Cayetano's declaration has not even been the subject of any conversations at the Palace.
Cayetano ran and won his second term as senator under the administration ticket in the 2013 midterm elections. He is a member of the Nacionalista Party, which is allied with the Aquino administration.
