MANILA -- The legal counsel of provisional state witness Dennis Cunanan on Thursday said her client has been truthful since the start of the Senate Blue Ribbon hearing committee on the pork barrel scam.

Atty. Odessa Bernardo told ANC Primetime that there are no inconsistencies in the statements of her client.

Cunanan's credibility has been questioned, following perceived inconsistencies in his statements about meeting alleged pork barrel scam mastermind Janet Lim Napoles and receiving money from whistleblower Benhur Luy.

Bernardo said that in Cunanan's sworn statement, the first time he met Napoles was at the office of the Technology Resource Center where he was former director general.

"He never claimed that after that, he never met Mrs. Napoles again," the lawyer said. "He never denied meeting Mrs. Napoles, and he never made any statement that he never met her."

On receiving P930,000 in a paper bag from Luy, Bernardo said that from what she remembers from Luy's statement, it was not he who directly transacted with Cunanan, but a certain Evelyn de Leon.

"Mr. Cunanan said na wala syang natanggap galing kay Evelyn," she said. "He never received any kickback, or money from Evelyn de Leon."

According to Bernardo, Cunanan never belied the statement of Luy.

"Hindi niya kino-contradict. Maaring sinabi nya na posible na nagpunta sya sa JLN, for inspection, because they're supposed to inspect the office of the NGOs. Hindi naman nya dineny. Ang hindi nya maamin, sa konsensya nya at konsensya ng pamilya nya, ay ang ibiniintang sa kanya na hindi naman totoo," she said.

She said that again and again, as his lawyer, she asked Cunanan if he ever received any money from Napoles, because at this point, there's nothing to lose as he is already a provisional witness.

"Sinasabi nya na sa sitwayson nya, madali nya na aminin pero hindi makaya ng konsensya nya na umamin sa hindi totoo. That's the point we would like to emphasize," she said.

Bernardo also said Cunanan has nothing against the senators as he knows that they are just doing their jobs.

"It was the earlier reports about him, about his alleged ill-gotten wealth, his lifestyle, the harassment of his children... those are the demolition jobs that we are concerned about," she said.

Bernardo also said Cunanan allegedly getting kickbacks will not affect his testimony with regard the involvement of three senators in the PDAF scam case.

"He was able to prove that he was a credible witness this afternoon. He is open to the public, they are open to do a lifestyle check on him. He has been open ever since," she said.
