MANILA, Philippines – After a brief hacking row, social media is now abuzz with Filipino and Malaysian citizens trading barbs over the clash in Sabah.

Netizens want the Sabah standoff to be resolved but differ on the desired outcome of the issue.

Malaysians blamed the supporters of the Sultanate of Sulu and Borneo for the ongoing clash, as they ignored the orders of Philippine President Benigno Aquino III to return to their homes. They also said Sabah is better off under Malaysian control, as Filipinos go out of their way to settle in the area and prefer life there than in the Philippines.

Filipinos, however, said the sultanate should take back what is theirs. They also said the government should take more decisive action, as there has already been too much bloodshed, echoing sentiments aired by protesters at the Malaysian Embassy in Makati City this morning.

However, others expressed dismay at the actions of the supporters of the Sulu Sultanate.

Meanwhile, others called for cooler heads to prevail. Nobody should criticize the Philippine government for its actions, they said, as territorial disputes are sensitive. War must be avoided, as the country also has other territorial disputes with countries such as China and Vietnam.

Malaysians also encouraged others to pray for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Sabah.
