MANILA - The Senate on Monday approved the Freedom of Information (FOI) bill on second reading, Senator Grace Poe said.

Poe, chairperson of the Committee on Public Information and Mass Media and one of the co-authors of Senate Bill 1733, expects the upper chamber to approve it on third reading on March 10.

The Senate earlier promised to approve it on final reading before Congress adjourns on March 15.

"We are inching closer to the passage of the #FOI bill. Thank you for your steadfast support. Konting push pa!" Poe said.

The Senate passed an FOI bill in the 15th Congress, but the House of Representatives failed to approve its own version of the bill.

House Speaker Sonny Belmonte has promised that an FOI bill will be passed in his term but the measure has suffered delays anew in the lower House.

FOI deliberations in the Lower House have also been slow compared to the Senate. with a report from Ruby Tayag, dzMM
