MANILA - Alleged rice smuggling king Davidson Bangayan failed to attend a Senate hearing on Monday after being hospitalized, his lawyer said.

Atty. Benito Salazar said Bangayan experienced back pains after lifting something.

He said Bangayan’s camp will present a medical certificate to back their claims.

Bangayan, whom some believe is rice smuggler David Tan, was already slapped with contempt by the Senate during the previous hearing. Senator Juan Ponce Enrile said Bangayan had submitted documents to a local court proving that he is David Tan, but the latter denied the allegation.

Bangayan is out of detention after paying bail in the power pilferage case filed earlier by the Department of Justice. – from a report by Ruby Tayag, dzMM
