MANILA - Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Sixto Brillantes reiterated Friday there is no offense of premature campaigning anymore.
This after being asked for comment on the accusation of premature campaigning by the camp of Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim against city councilors who attended a political event of Manila Vice-Mayor Isko Moreno.
"Walang basis. Ewan ko sino nag-advice kay Mayor Lim. There is no premature campaigning for local candidates anytime. In fact, they can go up with the senatorial candidates. Wala pang candidate for local officially. Maski magrally araw-araw hindi bawal pero garapal," he said.
Brillantes explained that this is because of jurisprudence in the Penera case where the Supreme Court said that a person only becomes a candidate at the start of the campaign period.
"There are prospective candidates. Kung walang candidate, walang campaigning. Yun ang basis eh," he said.
