MANILA, Philippines – Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas has advised candidates for the 2013 polls not to get intimidated by the New People's Army (NPA).
Roxas said he has received reports from several poll bets that they have been getting threats from the rebel group.
The NPA is allegedly extorting money from candidates who are running in areas with heavy NPA presence.
The money will allegedly be used for the candidates’ “permit to campaign” and “permit to win.”
Roxas said the threats are a scam and will have no effect in the elections.
He said candidates being contacted by the NPA should immediately inform the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and Philippine National Police (PNP). -- Report from Edwin Sevidal, dzMM
