MANILA – A number of independent senatorial candidates embarked on their campaigns today.
The independent bets are presenting themselves as the better alternative to candidates of the two major political coalitions.
One of the independent senatorial bets, Bro. Eddie Villanueva spoke in front of nearly a thousand supporters in Malolos.
Villanueva, a candidate of Bangon Pilipinas, laid out his platform, which is anchored on education and more inclusive economic growth.
“Ito ang malapit sa puso ko na itaas ang masang Pilipino sa kanilang kabuhayan. Pangalawa, ‘yung edukasyong napapanahon. Every year, mayroong 2 million graduates na nadagdag sa job market,” he said.
Meantime, Teddy Casiño of the Makabayan Party, accompanied by his supporters, held a symbolic run from Buendia to the Senate.
Casiño said he wants to provide an alternative to candidates coming from rich families and political dynasties.
“Malaki ang aking pag-asa na bagamat walang kasing laking makinarya ng mga traditional na pulitika, ay kasama naman natin ang sambayanan,” he said.
Puerto Princesa Mayor Edward Hagedorn, on the other hand, held a motorcade around Manila with Miss Earth beauties.
If elected, Hagedorn vows to push for laws that will champion the environment.
“Hahanap tayo ng mga batas, gagawa tayo ng panukala na talagang magbibigay ng honest to goodness anti-poverty program ang mga kababayan nating naghihirap,” he said.
The candidates may have no backing from major political parties, but they are hopeful the public will give the chance to serve. -- ANC
