MANILA - President Aquino will be calling for a meeting of relevant government agencies to address concerns on road safety in view of recent fatal accidents involving buses.
"Road safety is a concern. The President is concerned about this latest," Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda said referring to the accident that killed artist Tado Jimenez.
"He will be calling for a meeting of all relevant agencies with respect to road safety and also with respect to public transport."
Last Friday, a Florida Transit bus fell off a ravine in Bontoc, Mountain Province, killing 15 people including Jimenez.
Last December, a Don Mariano Transit bus fell off the Skyway in Parañaque City, killing 20 people.
Despite the accidents, the Palace is satisfied with the performance of Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board chair Winston Ginez.
Lacierda said Ginez has been taking a “proactive stance” in addressing road concerns, citing the recent cancellation of the franchise of Don Mariano Transit.
"Remember that franchise is a privilege. It’s not a right under our public transportation laws and therefore by cancelling their franchise, it’s an effective way to shape up and for other companies to shape up," he said.
