MANILA, Philippines - Lawyer Ferdinand Topacio plans to file an ethics complaint against Senator Teofisto “TG” Guingona III after the lawmaker claimed that the alleged misuse of funds from the Malampaya gas project is connected to the murder of environmentalist and radio broadcaster Gerry Ortega.

Topacio, the lawyer of Palawan Governor Joel Reyes, said a disbarment petition versus Guingona may be next since it is unethical for a government official with a high position to link two issues that are totally separate from each other.

The lawyer pointed out that the murder case has yet to be heard by a court, and therefore it is unfair that Guingona’s committee would already claim guilt on the part of Reyes.

Guingona is the head of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee.

“Yes, most definitely. Through the testimonies of several people and several NGOs, it is clear that Gerry Ortega was hitting hard on the corruption of Malampaya funds," Guingona earlier said, when asked if the two issues are connected.

"And based on evidence, there was warning but it was disregarded. Because of that, he was murdered. It is very clear," he added. - from a report by Ricky Velasco, dzMM
