MANILA, Philippines - The United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) and Team PNoy will kick off their respective election campaigns this week, expected to be an exchange of heated words.
In an interview with radio dzRB, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said a war of words is already a fact “given the color and character of the elections.”
President Benigno Aquino III will be attending the administration’s “opening salvo” in Plaza Miranda on Tuesday, while UNA stalwarts led by Vice President Jejomar Binay are expected to be in Cebu.
Valte dismissed UNA secretary general Toby Tiangco’s challenge that Aquino’s Liberal Party (LP) name the so-called “pretenders in yellow.”
“Hangga’t hindi pa nagsisimula ang kampanya, dapat sabihin na ni Sec. Carandang o ni Sen. Drilon kung sinu-sino iyon. Bakit ba ayaw niyang sabihin kung sino? Dahil ba may ilang nakiki-angkas at hindi-tunay na dilawan sa 12 kandidato na lumabas sa kanilang TV ad?” Tiangco has asked.
Valte said: “There is no need. It’s clear who the ‘pretenders’ are. It’s clear who are in [the president’s] slate.”
Meanwhile, UNA bet and Cagayan Rep. Jack Enrile called on his fellow senatorial candidates to be passionate about their platforms rather than bringing down rivals.
“Perhaps we the candidates can show the world that elections in this side of the world can be both clean and civil. Let us, the national candidates, set the example,” he said.
