MANILA, Philippines - Members of the House minority led by Rep. Danilo Suarez called Commission on Elections (Comelec) chairman Sixto Brillantes “irresponsible” for threatening to go back to manual elections in May.
Suarez said the problems that emerged in Saturday’s series of mock polls should not be brushed off lightly by Comelec.
The Comelec said Saturday’s mock election in 20 voting centers in 10 areas nationwide was a success. This, amid the problems noticed in the use of the precinct count optical scan (PCOS) machines.
Brillantes said if stakeholders don’t accept the machines, they will go back to manual elections. He said there is no more time to buy new ones.
In today’s hearing, Suarez said Comelec should look into the problems of automation and solve it.
He noted the same problems that existed in 2010 have not been resolved, among them ballots rejected despite having no defects, PCOS transmission failure, jamming paper ballots, etc.
