MANILA, Philippines - The lawyer of Pagadian Mayor Samuel Co said the reported incarceration of Aman Futures founder Manuel Amalilio is "disturbing."
In a statement sent to the media, lawyer Trixie Cruz Angeles said: “It is our stand that in order to render full justice to Mayor Co and all the other victims of the Aman Futures Scam, Amalilio must stand trial here in the Philippines as soon as possible.”
A report from Malaysia’s The Star on Tuesday said Amalilio, who is known in Malaysia as Mohammad Kamal Sa’ad, pleaded guilty to charges of holding a fake Philippine passport. He has been sentenced to two years in prison in Malaysia, according to Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia Ed Malaya.
The Department of Justice (DoJ) has yet to announce its next move.
Meanwhile, Co’s camp welcomed developments that some investors have withdrawn their complaints against the mayor.
“These complainants were grossly misinformed by a radio program in September that filing a case against the incumbent mayor would result in a recovery of their money. We are confident that the remaining cases shall soon be dismissed, as it is evident that the mayor is being made a fall guy in this scam,” she said.
She said the Co camp is confident new cases will be dismissed.
“We cannot comment on any alleged new cases filed by alleged victims who are brave at giving interviews but not at having themselves identified because we have not received a copy of the alleged complaint. Nevertheless, we are confident that that case too, shall be dismissed,” Cruz Angeles said.
