MANILA - The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) has come up with its shortlist for the position of Deputy Ombudsman for Mindanao, following the retirement of Deputy Ombudsman Humphrey Monteroso last Dec. 4.
Assistant Ombudsman Rodolfo Elman and Atty. Rowena Apao-Adlawan secured five votes each; Ombudsman Director Maria Iluminada Lapid-Viva, Atty. Romeo Alcantara, and Atty. Melinda Alconcel-Dayanghirang obtained four votes each.
President Aquino will appoint the next Deputy Ombudsman for Mindanao from the list.
There will be another vacancy in the anti-graft office beginning Feb. 6, in view of the retirement of controversial Deputy Ombudsman for the Military and Other Law Enforcement Offices Emilio Gonzalez III.
Gonzalez was sacked by the Office of the President due to delays in the final resolution of a robbery/extortion case against P/SInsp. Rolando Mendoza, the cop who hostaged Hong Kong tourists inside a bus in 2010 at the Quirino Grandstand.
The SC struck down Malacanan's sacking of Gonzalez, ruling that there was "lack of cause" to dismiss Gonzalez from service.
The high court also held that the OP "has no power of discipline over the Office of the Deputy Ombudsman."
