MANILA - President Aquino and minority lawmakers in the House of Representatives have found something to agree on: they are against a move to reinstate the death penalty for heinous crimes.

House Minority Leader Ronaldo Zamora said, "All of us are in agreement: No to death penalty."

Former Justice Secretary and now 1BAP party-list Representative Silvestre Bello also argued that death penalty is not a deterrent to crime.

"Best deterrent is speedy and effective arrest, prosecution and conviction of criminals," Bello said.

President Benigno Aquino III is also not keen on proposals to reimpose the death penalty.

"Hindi yan ang kaisa-isang solusyon para sa deterrence. Mas deterrence siguro yung katiyakan na makukulong ka o mahuhuli ka pag may ginawa kang krimen at yun ang puspusang nating ginagawa," Aquino said.

The President said he is also worried about wrongful convictions, saying that the justice system is not perfect. -- With report from Willard Cheng, ABS-CBN News
