MANILA (UPDATED) - A daughter of Vice-President Jejomar Binay and a son of Senator Edgardo Angara both suffered lower rankings in an opinion poll conducted by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) last January 17-19.
Aurora Rep. Juan Edgardo "Sonny" Angara dropped from 5th to 7th slot in August 2012 to 13th in the latest survey, while Maria Lourdes Nancy Binay fell from 9th to 10th in December 2012 to 12th in the January 2013 poll.
Both candidates placed lower despite having advertisements on television and radio.
In the latest SWS survey, Binay is in 12th place while Angara is in 13th spot.
In terms of voter preferences, Angara got 39% preference among 1,200 respondents in the poll, while Binay was preferred by 43%.
Voter preference for Angara rose from 35% in December 2012 to 39% in January 2013, while voter preference for Binay went up from 41% in December 2012 to 43% in January 2013.
The Aurora legislator, in an interview with dzMM, sees the Senate race as a close fight.
"Ang pinag-uusapan na lang ho siguro ay daang libong boto," he said.
Angara said he has released infomercials starring Sarah Geronimo ahead of the elections.
"Siya rin ho ang nag-endorso sa (father ko) noong nakaraang eleksiyon," he said.
Angara said he does not have a problem with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) limiting TV airtime for candidates.
"kung sa telebisyon, medyo okay po sa atin iyon, dahil hindi naman po ganoon kalalim (finances) tulad ng ibang kandidato," he said.
"In a way, medyo may relief na din doon dahil halos patas-patas na ang mga kandidato," he added.
However, he opposes limiting radio airtime for candidates.
"Pero iyung sa radyo, iyung 180 minutes, medyo payat ho iyon. Sa TV, ilan lang istasyon pero sa radyo, bawat probinsiya, may kani-kaniyang radio station. Medyo challenge iyon, iyung 180 minutes, paano ihahati sa 16 na rehiyon at ilang siyudad," he added.
Legarda, Escudero, Cayetano
Three re-electionists continue to hold the top spots in the SWS pre-election survey.
Staying in first place is Senator Loren Legarda with a score of 65 percent.
Legarda is running under both the slates of the Liberal Party and the United Nationalist Alliance.
In close 2nd and 3rd were Senators Francis Escudero and Alan Peter Cayetano.
They are followed by Rep. JV Ejercito, Senators Gregorio Honasan and Koko Pimentel, former Senator Migs Zubiri, former Rep. Cynthia Villar, Rep. Jack Enrile, Senator Antonio Trillanes, Grace Poe, and Binay.
Poe, who did not rank higher than 20th in the last 2 SWS surveys, pulled off the biggest surprise in the latest poll results. -- with ANC
