MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Foreign Affairs is now looking for additional foreign service officers.

DFA Assistant Secretary Raul Hernandez told reporters that they now need 78 foreign service officers.

"We have been campaigning and putting ads in order to encourage people, young people less than 35 years old, to take the exams and join the foreign service of the Philippines," he said.

An examination is scheduled this March.

Hernandez said DFA people have to multitask to service the needs of embassies.

The DFA does not only stamp visas and issue passports. According to Hernandez, they work on the three pillars: the National Security Pillar, the Economic Diplomacy Pillar and the assitance to nationals and OFWs pillar.

Passing rate

Last year, 500 people took the foreign service exams but only 9 passed.

Hernandez said the passing rate has been similar to the previous years. He said it is a difficult exam because an applicant needs to have knowledge of everything under the sun.

Hernandez mentioned some of the fields that will be covered by the examination including international law, international commerce, the Philippine condition,  economic diplomacy, history, world history, international relations and foreign language.
