MANILA, Philippines - Senate Minority leader Alan Peter Cayetano plans to question before the Supreme Court the Commission on Elections’ (Comelec) rules on airtime limits.
In an interview with ANC, Cayetano said while he understands the poll body’s efforts to control campaign spending, it should not distinguish between ads shown on national media and those that appear in the provinces in the interest of equal opportunity.
He added that even if the Comelec limits airtime exposure, candidates would still have to use their donations for other expenses which would increase campaign cost rather than bring it down.
“Ang hindi nila alam, pag sinupil or piniga mo spending sa media mas magastos. How much will it cost me to go to 80 provinces, e sa radio abot mo silang lahat…Kapag nag-guest ka ng news, kailangan mo pa magpaalam sa Comelec…Paano kung may baha sa isang lugar kailangan magpaalam ka muna? Kailan mo makukuha yung paalam diba? O kaya may shootout...kailangan magpaalam? That’s prior restraint.”
He said media should not be regulated.
The campaign period for national posts begins on February 12. – from ANC
