MANILA, Philippines - The proposal for an expanded liquor ban is not important to the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. explained that the issue remains iffy since the Omnibus Election Code only imposes a liquor ban on election day and the day before.

"Not very important to us but since it was blown up, desisyon naming initially, di pwede. The law is very specific. Inuulit ulit ni [Metro Manila Development Authority] Chairman Francis Tolentino na walang nakalagay na ONLY. Hindi ko sinasabi ayaw namin. I just don't want to violate the law."

Officially, the suggestion remains under study by the commission.

If the poll body does adopt it though, Brillantes said the liquor ban will most likely be expanded to just a maximum of one week.

"Options nito, 5 days, 2 days to 1 week. Pwede hanggang ngayon eh but baka demanda na kami ng beer manufacturers," he said.
