MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) - National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) executive director Benito Ramos has resigned his post to take care of his ailing wife.

In his letter to Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin, Ramos reiterated his earlier request that he be allowed to resign so he could attend to his wife who is a diabetic.

“Having endured the demands of my duties and responsibilities and believing that I have done my best in serving the OCD-DND and NDRRMC, my efficacy on the job is now being gravely affected. I now must yield this post for the sake of compassion to my ailing spouse in order to spend more time with her," he said.

"I therefore seek your kind understanding for having reached this point of my life - not to retreat from public service - but to face the hard realities of lifetime partnership commitment in the most fundamental unit of society," he added.

Ramos said he believes the government has enough able and willing public servants who can take over the mantle of duty at the Office of Civil Defense.

Ramos served the Armed Forces of the Philippines for over 3 decades before he retired in 2007, with the rank of major general.

In 2010, President Aquino appointed Ramos to the Office of Civil Defense and later as executive director of the NDRRMC. With a report by Jing Castaneda, ABS-CBN News
