MANILA, Philippines - President Aquino previously asked the Office of the President to study the recommendation to abolish the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG), his spokesman, Edwin Lacierda, said Thursday.
"The President wanted further study… the recommendations were made. The OP is still studying that particular recommendation. The President tasked OP to study that particular recommendation. There are a number of details that need to be vetted. But just to make it clear, the pursuit of ill-gotten wealth will continue regardless of whether the recommendation will be acted upon by the President,” Lacierda said.
Lacierda said the proposal "is not something new" pointing out that the PCGG had already proposed its abolition in early 2011, as cited in a PCGG report posted on its website.
He also said he does not agree that the PCGG failed in its mandate to recover the Marcos wealth.
“It’s so sweeping naman to say it’s a failure. Marami rin naman sila na-recover na ill-gotten wealth. That’s why we would like to invite you to look at the (PCGG) report itself,” he said.
