‘Arroyos have good financial advisers’

MANILA - The key to the P10.97 million yearly increases in the Arroyo couple’s wealth was their choice of savvy financial managers. According to Ruy Rondain, the lawyer of First Gentleman Mike Arroyo, the dramatic jump in the wealth of the Arroyo couple since 2001 is clear: “As far as the stocks are concerned, at least, they had very good financial advisers.”

Gov't spent P45M on road to lot Arroyo sold for P42M

Last December, First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo sold a 29,630-square meter agricultural lot in Bulacan for P41.5 million. The transaction may help explain the sudden increase in President Arroyo’s net worth from 2007 to 2008. Yet from several angles, it is a deal that invites more questions than the answers it purportedly provides.

SONA one week after: Sin tax reforms deferred

MANILA - Apparently considering the tobacco and liquor industry position that the planned new unitary excise-tax scheme was “ill-timed and [will] likely cause more harm than good” to the bigger goal of optimizing revenue flows, the government has shelved the plan until 2012, Finance Undersecretary Gil Beltran said on Tuesday night.

An OFW’s reaction on criticisms of the SONA
