LIST: Maricar Reyes' cake + 9 new dessert finds

MANILA -- The recent Ultimate Taste Test 2015 at Glorietta in Makati drew crowds of foodies eager to sample treats from more than 45 food purveyors.

Many established dessert and confectionary companies also joined the event like Kumori Bakery, which let diners taste its krone (crispy tube with a cream filling) and creamy Hanjuku Cheesecake.

There were also UTT favorites Voila Jars with its microwavable cakes; Rita Ice Cream, which had several types of sorbets and ice cream (Alex’s Lemonade was an excellent palette cleanser in between tastings); and First Harvest, which apart from being a social enterprise also had products like the salted coco caramel, its unique take on the local coco jam.

Here are 10 of our favorite dessert discoveries (in no particular order).

Chocoliquor Cakes by Maricar

Actress Maricar Reyes-Poon was simply radiant as she talked about her cakes and her passion for baking. “I was already baking since high school, and I just went back to it, and so here we are,” she quipped when asked about her story.

Her Chocoliquor cake, which was packaged in classy gold containers, her was moist and chocolatey. But what made her cakes special was the liquor infused in the cake didn’t overpower but enhanced the chocolate, giving it a subtle flavor. Reyes and her husband, singer Richard Poon, mix their own liquor for the cakes but the actress refused to even give a hint on the ingredients in her secret blend. (We definitely tasted berries, raisins and fruits.) This is a good alternative to the usual fruit cake of the holiday season.
