MANILA, Philippines - Wikipedia, the popular web-based collaborative encyclopedia project, will be 10 years old this Saturday.
Celebrations will vary from country to country -- from parties in Germany to free drinks in the United States. Here in the Philippines, a Wikipedia Takes the City-style photo scavenger hunt will be held.
Called Wikipedia Takes Manila, the contest requires teams of 2 to 3 people to take pictures of various buildings, monuments and structures in Manila on January 15.
The event is organized by Wikimedia Philippines (WMPH), a chapter of the foundation that operates Wikipedia.
"Wikipedia Takes Manila is free! However, teams are responsible for paying for fares and entrance fees incurred during the course of the competition," WMPH said in the Wikipedia website.
Launched in 2001, Wikipedia is described as a "free encyclopedia that anyone can edit," providing updated information about people, places and recent events.
To date, it has 17 million articles written collaboratively by volunteers around the world. Almost all articles on the website can be edited by anyone.
