Pinoys in pageants: 8 successes in 2012
MANILA, Philippines -- Two of the Filipino delegates to this year's major international pageants were crowned winners, while three others, including Janine Tugonon, were runners up to the crowned titlist.
The year 2012 proved to be a successful one for the Philippines in beauty pageants, as Filipinos -- male and female -- were recognized in eight popular international competitions.
The country's representatives to these pageants took home two crowns, four runner-up trophies, and two semifinals recognition this year.
Here's a rundown of the eight beauty kings and queens that made the Philippines proud in 2012:
1. June Macasaet, winner, 16th Manhunt International
The 29-year-old Filipino commercial and ramp model bested 52 other international contestants at the 16th edition of the male beauty pageant held on November 9 in Bangkok, Thailand. The first Filipino to win Manhunt International, Macasaet recently said he is open to joining local show business.

2. Kevin Balot, winner, 8th Miss International Queen
The Pinay transgender beauty, 21, proudly presented "the beauty of the gays" in the country at the pageant night held on November 2 in Pattaya, Thailand. Besting 21 other transgenders, Balot took home the Miss International Queen title along with $10,000 and other prizes.
3. Janine Tugonon, first runner-up, 61st Miss Universe
The 23-year-old Pharmacy graduate made Pinoys proud with her performance across the various competitions in the pageant (swimwear, long gown, national costume), especially in the question and answer portion. Out of the 89 candidates in the pageant held last Thursday (Manila time) in Las Vegas, Tugonon and Miss USA Olivia Culpo finished first runner-up and Miss Universe titlist, respectively.

4. Stephany Stefanowitz, first runner-up, 12th Miss Earth
The Filipina model and fashion designer was named Miss Earth Air (first runner-up) in Alabang, Muntinlupa City on November 24. She placed second to Miss Czech Republic Tereza Fajksová, who was crowned Miss Earth. In the question and answer portion, Stefanowitz pointed to her advocacy for renewable energy as her "defining moment as a woman."
5. Andrew Wolff, first runner-up, 6th Mister World
The Philippine rugby team player, 27, said his runner-up finish in the official male counterpart of the more popular Miss World pageant was "unexpected." Wolff did not have to join a local competition in order to participate in the international pageant night held in Kent, England on November 25. Crowned Mister World 2012 was Francisco Escobar of Colombia.

6. Elaine Kay Moll, third runner-up, 4th Miss Supranational
Having placed first runner-up in this year's Bb. Pilipinas pageant -- where Tugonon emerged as the winner -- Moll represented the country in Warsaw, Poland on September 15. Besting 49 other international delegates, the Pinay beauty placed third runner-up. Katsyariana Buraya of Belarus was crowned Miss Supranational 2012.
7. Nicole Schmitz, Top 15, 52nd Miss International
The seasoned pageant competitor, 24, competed with 68 others at the pageant night held on October 21 in Okinawa, Japan. Schmitz finished in the Top 15. The host country's delegate, Ikumi Yoshimatsu, won Miss International 2012.
8. Queenierich Rehman, Top 15, 62nd Miss World
The beatboxing beauty queenfinished in the Top 15 at the pageant night held on August 18 in Ordos, China. Miss World 2011 Ivian Sarcos of Venezuela crowned her successor Yu Wenxia, who is the host country's delegate to the major annual pageant.
