'Vagina' playwright in PH for 1 Billion Rising tour

MANILA, Philippines -- The Tony Award-winning playwright of "The Vagina Monologues" is in the country for the Manila stop of the One Billion Rising world tour.

Eve Ensler, founder of the global campaign, is in the country until December 22 to meet with local leaders involved in the women-initiated anti-violence movement.

The activist-performer has held meetings with Filipino women's party Gabriela, as well as members and officers of the One Billion Rising Philippines Task Force Group.

The group includes Migrante International, KMU, Center For Women's Research, ACT, Association for the Rights of Children in Southeast Asia, Amihan, SAMAKANA and Gabriela Youth.

Actresses and activists who have been part of the local staging of "The Vagina Monologues" since 2000 also took part in the Manila stop of the One Billion Rising tour.

Ensler will also hold talks, creative events and shows in the country to launch the new activities of the One Billion Rising Philippines Campaign.

Before the Philippines, Ensler's world tour had stops in Peru, Guatemala, Mexico and Los Angeles. She will next visit India, Egypt, Paris, Belgium, London and Congo.
