When I was growing up, Christmas time meant new shoes for the brood. I remember my father used to bring us to Escolta, Manila or the Marikina Shoe Expo in Cubao, Quezon City for a brand new pair.
I don’t know what is it with Christmas - maybe the bonuses or maybe the desire to make children happy - but shoe stores were always filled to the brim during the Yuletide season.
I remember making my way through big crowds in stores to find a place to fit the shoes, and the pressure on the barker, the one who calls out the pair of shoes from the bodega (warehouse), as he or she is bombarded with orders, left to right.
At one point, Shoemart in Makati became the place to get one's shoes. During my teen years, when PX or imported shoes were harder to find in SM, Cartimar in Pasay City became the place of choice to buy popular shoe brands such as Nike and Converse.
Up to now, one finds many shoppers trooping to Shoemart come Christmas time. I guess nothing much has changed in terms of people’s attitudes on where to buy shoes.
But do they still go to Marikina Shoe Expo to buy Made in Marikina shoes?
