MANILA, Philippines – Christmas is just around the corner and as the special occasion nears, Filipinos gear up for the traditional dawn masses, more popularly known as Misa de Gallo or Simbang Gabi.
Simbang Gabi is a series of 9 dawn masses offered to the Blessed Mother which starts every December 16 and concludes with a mass on Christmas eve.
This tradition was first introduced in Mexico in 1587, where the Pope granted the request of Fray Diego de Soria, prior of the convent of San Agustin Acolman, to hold Christmas mass outdoors since the Church could not accommodate the many people attending the eucharistic celebration.
This year, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), in coordination with Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, will hold "Simbang Gabi @ d’ CCP" from December 16 to 24 at 5 a.m. and a Misa de Aguinaldo on December 24 at 9 p.m. at the CCP Main Building Ramp.
Those interested to come and take part as the Christmas festivities start may call the CCP Theater Operations Department’s Venue Management Division at 832-1125 loc 1412/1413.
