MANILA, Philippines – Beauty queen Janine Tugonon admitted on Sunday that she is already feeling the pressure to bring home the crown when she competes at the Miss Universe pageant in Las Vegas next month.
In a live interview on “The Buzz” on Sunday, she said the pressure began as soon as she was crowned Bb. Pilipinas-Universe, such that she didn’t want to celebrate her win at the time.
“Yes, ‘yon ‘yung na-feel ko after winning,” she told host Charlene Gonzales, herself a beauty queen.
Tugonon has big shoes to fill as her predecessor Shamcey Supsup was named third runner-up in last year’s Miss Universe – one year after Venus Raj made the top five in the same contest the previous year.
Before winning the Bb. Pilipinas crown, Tugonon recalled an interview, where she said that the next Miss Philippines will face great pressure. “Hindi ko alam ako pala ‘yon,” she told Gonzales.
This year is Tugonon’s second time to join Bb. Pilipinas.
Supsup recalled Tugonon very well in 2011. “I was No. 26, at siya No. 25 or 27,” she said in a taped interview aired on “The Buzz.” “Lagi kaming magkatabi at lagi ko siyang magkasama.”
Supsup described Tugonon said as “happy go lucky.”
“Ngayong 2012, sobra ‘yung transformation. As in nakita ko talaga ‘yung transformation, talagang ‘yung effort niya, as in to the nth level,” Supsup said, praising Tugonon’s dedication to lose weight by going to the gym regularly and following a strict diet.
Raj, meanwhile, praised Tugonon’s features. “Pilipinang Pilipina talaga ‘yung dating niya. Siguro ‘pag dating pa lang niya sa Miss Universe, you can really say na this is Miss Philippines,” Raj said, adding that Tugonon also has a strong fighting spirit.
“Ang gusto ko kay Janine, parang compared to me hindi siya apektado, she’s really focused,” Supsup said.
Tugonon said she values the advice given to her by Supsup and Raj. “Sa akin kasi, sila ‘yung mga tao na may pinakatamang payong masasabi kasi sila galing na dun. Si Shamcey iniisa niya from day one kung ano ang gagawin niyo dun,” she told Gonzales, adding that she also underwent catwalk lessons, makeup training and personality development on top of her gym schedule.
Tugonon also thanked her family for supporting her. She said her parents and sister will join her in Las Vegas.
Unfortunately her boyfriend of seven months couldn’t make it to the pageant night. “Na deny siya sa visa. Gusto ko nga kausapin ‘yung consul nun eh,” she said, adding that her boyfriend also supports her, especially with her exercise routine, joining her in playing badminton or jogging even after his work.
Meanwhile, Supsup and Raj gave their message to Tugonon before she leaves for the US.
“Alam namin na kayang kaya mo. Faith mo lang ang balikan mo dahil ‘yon lang ang makakatuylong sa ‘yo,” Raj said.
“You are doing your best. Kahit ano ang mangayari we will always be proud of you,” Supsup said.
