MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Health's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned the public against buying and consuming a Nestle USA-produced NESQUICK Chocolate Powder and Pascual Laboratories' Calchews food supplement.

The FDA, in an advisory, said Nestle USA has made a voluntary recall of NESQUIK Chocolate Powder in the 10.9, 21.8, and 40.7-ounce canisters due to possible presence of salmonella in some of its ingredients.

The product is registered and sold in the Philippines as Nestle NESQUICK (with letter C) Chocolate Flavor in plastic containers, the agency said.

The affected products were produced in October 2012 and with an expiration date of October 2014.

"Those who have purchased said products should not consume it and return to the same place of purchase for a refund," the FDA said.

"Persons who think they may have become ill from taking the affected health products are advised to consult their health care providers," it added.

The FDA also urged the public to report to the agency people or stores selling the affected product.

Calchews recall

The FDA, in a separate advisory, also informed consumers on Pascual Laboratories' voluntary recall of its Calchews food supplement that has tested positive for Streptococcus Aureus and Salmonella SPP contamination.

The bacteria cause various illnesses, including acute gastroenteritis that is characterized by headache, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, fever, and vomiting, the agency warned.

"Pascual Laboratories conducted an investigation to determine the cause of the contamination and has stopped distribution of the same pending completion of the investigation," it added.

The FDA told people who bought Calchews to immediately return them to Pascual Laboratories at L&I Building in South Triangle, Quezon City. They may also reach Pascual laboratories at hotline numbers 9201911 in Metro Manila and 6344-6931891 in the provinces.

Those who have consumed Calchews and become ill are advised to immediately see a doctor.
