MANILA, Philippines – Local theater company Atlantis Productions on Wednesday unveiled its lineup for 2013, including three major musicals that will be mounted by its joint venture with entertainment outfit Viva Communications, Inc.
Viva Atlantis Theatricals will make its bow in the local theater scene with the stage musical version of the 1997 hit movie, “The Full Monty,” which will open in April 2013. The Tony Award-nominated musical is about six unemployed steel workers who decide to do a strip act in order to make money.
This will be followed by “Tarzan: The Musical,” the stage version of the hit Disney cartoon movie with photos by pop superstar Phil Collins, which will open in June at the Meralco Theater.
The Viva-Atlantis joint venture will wrap its first year with “The Addams Family” which will open in November also at the Meralco Theater. The musical is based on the famous cartoon strip, which has also been made into several movies and TV shows through the years.
Casting for the three productions have yet to be announced.
On its own, Atlantis Productions has already announced that it will be mounting a new version of the acclaimed play "Piaf" by Pam Gems, with veteran stage actress Pinky Amador in the title role.
On Wednesday, Atlantis said it will also have a re-run of its successful production of “Rock of Ages,” which it presented last June with Fil-Australian MiG Ayesa and singer-actress Vina Morales. (Read our review of the musical here.)
The re-run is set for July although the announcement didn’t say if Ayesa and Morales will be reprising their roles.
Atlantis will also stage “Carrie: The Musical” in September with veteran stage actress Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo. Adapted from the Stephen King novel and the ‘70s horror movie, it focuses on a teenage girl with telekinetic powers and religious fanatic mother. When she is humiliated by her classmates at the high school prom, she wreaks havoc on everyone.
