MANILA, Philippines – An international health network, Stop TB Partnership, has awarded an editor of ABS-CBN Corp.'s news website, abs-cbnNEWS.com, the second prize in its Award for Excellence in Reporting on tuberculosis.
Senior editor David Dizon bagged the second prize in the low- and middle-income country category for his article “Stigma still a hindrance in TB prevention," published on abs-cbnNEWS.com on March 31, 2011.
Dizon’s article drew on his personal experience of having his daughter getting ill with tuberculosis (TB), after being exposed to her nanny who carried the disease.
Dizon noted that a fearful attitude exists in the Philippines about seeking diagnosis when TB symptoms appear.
“To be diagnosed with TB is like being marked with the scarlet letter of poverty,” Dizon wrote in his article.
Dizon was awarded $2,000.
The Award for Excellence in Reporting on TB recognized “outstanding reporting and commentary in print and on the web that materially increases the public's knowledge and understanding of TB and multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB), in countries affected by the disease.”
The award is supported by the Lilly MDR-TB Partnership.
The first prize of $3,000 went to Bharathi Ghanashyam of India for her blog, "Children and TB - the diagnostic challenges."
Ghanashyam’s blog highlighted the challenge of diagnosing TB in children in India.
Third prize of $1,000 was awarded to Evelyn Lirri of Uganda for her article "Tuberculosis is curable but is still a silent killer in Uganda", published in the Saturday Monitor.
Michael Specter of the United States, meawhile, won the first prize in the high-income country category for his feature in the New Yorker, "A Deadly Misdiagnosis."
Specter won $3,000.
