MANILA, Philippines – Kapamilya actress Erich Gonzales plays the role of an Ilocana baker who specializes in cupcakes in “Suddenly It’s Magic,” her first movie with Thai idol Mario Maurer.
But her baking skills are not just for show – to make her performance more convincing, Gonzales trained under Gina Navarro, the owner of the famous Estrel’s Caramel Cakes bakeshop.
“Nag-aral ako kay Tita Gina Navarro, ‘yung sa Estrel’s, for my cupcakes,” she said in an interview on Tuesday’s episode of “Kris TV.” “Marunong na talaga ako mag-bake.”
A visibly impressed Kris Aquino, who hosts “Kris TV,” asked Gonzales about the things that she can now bake. To which the actress replied: “Chocolate, depende sa flavors. Basta mga cupcakes.”
Gonzales knows how to prepare simple dishes even before she took baking lessons from Navarro. Just recently, she cooked the popular Filipino dish adobo for her leading man Maurer and the rest of his Thai staff.
“Sabi ni Mario, gustong-gusto niya makatikim ng adobo. So one time na ‘yung eksena ko that day sa gabi pa, so meron akong time para ipagluto siya at ‘yung team niya. Nagustuhan naman nila,” she told Push.com.ph.
In “Suddenly It’s Magic,” Maurer portrays a Thai superstar named Marcus who flies to the Philippines to escape his busy career.
Here, Marcus crosses paths with Joey (Gonzales), a romantically jaded baker who is bound to spark “magic” in the boring lilfe of the Thai celebrity.
“Suddenly It’s Magic” will be shown in theaters nationwide beginning October 31.
