DOH: Beware of stem cell therapy
MANILA, Philippines - Amid the proliferation of stem cell treatment facilities in the Philippines, Health Secretary Enrique Ona yesterday warned the public against procedures that make use of stem cells from embryos, aborted fetuses and animals.
In an advisory, Ona said that while research has shown that “adult stem cells and umbilical cord stem are the safest and most ethical, the public is warned that claims of preventive and curative benefits of stem cell therapy are still in their investigative stage.”
Globally, the demands for the use of stem cells as therapy in oncology, end-organ diseases and regenerative medicine are increasing. – “In the Philippines, there is observed proliferation of ‘centers’ offering stem cell treatments for medical and aesthetic purposes,” he said.
