MANILA, Philippines - Queen of All Media Kris Aquino on Tuesday reacted positively to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees' (UNHCR) invitation to be its Goodwill Ambassador for Asia, which puts her alongside Hollywood star Angelina Jolie, Italian designer-businessman Giorgio Armani and other personalities.
During her morning show, "Kris TV," Aquino said it is a big honor not only for her but also for her family and her country.
Aquino is a well-known host, actress and product endorser in the Philippines. She is also the youngest sister of President Benigno Aquino III.
"What brings this appointment big honor is that it's not just for the Philippines. Ako po ang representative ng Asia. Ang American representative ay si Angelina Jolie, tapos mayroong representative na I think sa France or Norway galing...basta from Asia eh Pilipinas ang napili nila at ako ang tatayo para sa ating lahat," Aquino said.
"Kaya maraming maraming salamat po kasi karangalan ito na ibinigay niyo di lang sa akin, hindi lang sa pamilya ko, kung hindi karangalan po sa bansang Pilipinas. So thank you, United Nations. Thank you, UN, for the trust you are giving me and the Philippines," she added.
Aquino, who received the good news a few days ago, said she is set to meet with UN officials next week.
"'Yung totoo po niyan was earlier this year ay nakipag-meeting po kami ni Boy Abunda about this. Nawalan na ako ng pag-asa kasi ten months na di pa rin sila bumabalik. Then I found out a week ago...noong nagmee-meeting ang UNHCR sa Switzerland," she shared.
"I don't have the papers yet, magmee-meeting kami next week po again with the United Nations representatives."
On Monday, Presidential adviser for political affairs Ronald Llamas said UNHCR wants Aquino to be its Goodwill Ambassador for Asia.
Llamas just arrived from Geneva, Switzerland, where he attended the executive committee hearing of the UNHCR.
He added that the UNHCR is also inviting President Aquino to deliver the keynote address during its anniversary in December where 80 heads of state are expected to attend.
The UNHCR website has described the Goodwill Ambassador as "the public face of the UN refugee agency."
"There are not many of them, but they help bring UNHCR to every corner of the world through their celebrity, popularity, influence and hard work," the agency said.
It added that basic requirements for the post include "a real desire to help people in need" and "a keen interest in refugee issues."
