In an interview with ABS-CBN News on Wednesday, Efron explained that his family has a lot of Filipino friends back in the United States and that made him excited to come to the country.
“I’m just excited to be here. My dad comes here a lot. Some of our close family friends are from the Philippines. I grew up going to their house eating chicken adobo and stuff like that. And then, of course, Vanessa (Hudgens) is a Filipino,” he said.
Hudgens is Efron’s former girlfriend and also his leading lady in the popular “High School Musical” series.
Efron is currently in the Philippines for a fan conference for Filipino clothing brand Penshoppe on Saturday.
Asked why he decided to fly in earlier, Efron said: “I wanted to see more of the Asian culture and be exposed more to the Philippines. I really love this area. I really want to get to know it. This is like a dream come true.”
Upon his arrival at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Efron took a private plane to Legazpi City, where he will reportedly be having a brief vacation at the posh Misibis Bay Resorts.
Asked why he chose to stay in that resort, Efron said: “A lot of my friends spoke very highly of it and I think it’s an awesome place to visit.”
The “High School Muscial” star said he would also love to see whale sharks and to eat balut.
“I would love to [eat balut]. I saw it on TV once. I’ve always been curious. I kinda want to try it,” he said.
Meanwhile, Efron invited all his fans to go to SM Mall of Asia Arean Saturday to see him.
“Everyone has been so fantastic. I’m, very very happy to be here. I know ‘mabuhay’ and ‘salamat po.’ It’s so good to be here, I can’t wait to see you soon. Come out to the fan event on Saturday. I’ll see you there. I’m very excited to be there, it’s gonna be awesome,” he said. -- with a report from MJ Felipe, ABS-CBN News
