MANILA, Philippines -- Many otakus, or Japanese pop culture enthusiasts, in the local and international scene are no stranger to Magnetic Rose.
With a name inspired by the Japanese anthology film “Memories,” Magnetic Rose is a blog site that has been receiving daily a number of hits from otakus who want to know the latest news on anime, gaming conventions and gatherings, pop culture news and cosplay, among others.
Magnetic Rose (magnetic-rose.net) was started by Rochelle Marnelli Dumlao, a proud cancer survivor who studied and lived in Japan for quite sometime, thus her penchant for things Japanese.
A graduate of Accounting from the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Dumlao became proficient in the Japanese language, gaining a Level 2 Japanese Proficiency accreditation.
While living in Japan in 2009, she started her blog where she puts in her thoughts about anime, gaming, manga and toy collecting, as well as her love for watching football and tennis.
Only someone who loves anime and Japanese pop culture so much can dedicatedly blog about such things and not get tired of it, which is one of the reasons why the website has stayed on. Visitors of her blog can see the time and effort put in on every post just to keep readers informed and up to date with events and gathering concerning anime, gaming, toy collecting and more.
Her website has won numerous awards, among them, the 2009 Southeast Asia-wide MTV Blogging Competition for Games and Gadgets where the winner was given a six-month writing assignment for MTV. That same year, the blog site became a national finalist for the Philippine Blog Award as well as for the Reader’s Choice Award.
Magnetic-Rose.net has also been featured online and offline media forms like Reuters, The New York Times Online, QTV, Flippish.com, ANC (ABS-CBN News Channel), MTV Asia, Hero TV and Animax, to name a few.
On its third year, Magnetic Rose.net joins the “Best of Anime 2012,’’ an event that will gather anime lovers, cosplay fanatics, and Japanese culture enthusiasts, on September 15 abd 16 at the SMX Convention as part of the ongoing 33rd Manila International Book Fair.
Among the activities is a blogging workshop which Dumlao will conduct for otakus and future bloggers.
Organizers of this year’s "Best of Anime" promise a stronger line-up of events for cosplayers, figure collectors, photographers, artists and even foodies.
