MANILA, Philippines – A 12-year-old Filipino student got a rare perfect score at the recently concluded 2012 Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC).

Farrell Eldrian Wu, a Grade 7 student at MGC New Life Christian Academy in Taguig City, is one of only two contestants who achieved a perfect score at the AMC. The other one is Zhi Yi Bernard Teo of Singapore.

Wu and Teo were given the AMC Peter O’Halloran Certificate, the highest award in the competition.

“The contest paper was done creatively. The problems were written in a way that they were not the typical school problems, but instead require logical thinking and approach with solutions that are not straightforward,” Wu said in a statement.

“After joining several math competitions, I have already learned not to focus on the awards. But instead, joining a competition is already winning in itself. To be given the opportunity to participate in any competition and to have the chance to answer beautiful math problems with fellow mathletes around the world are more important to me,” he added.

Dr. Simon Chua, president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines, said 73 Filipino students won medals and awards at this year’s AMC for belonging to the perfect scorers, 99 and 99+ percentile.
