Chit Estella journalism awards open

MANILA, Philippines – The committee behind the 1st Chit Estella Journalism Awards is now accepting nominations, according to VERA Files and the family of journalism professor Lourdes "Chit" Estella-Simbulan, who was killed in a Quezon City road accident in 2011.

Journalists may submit a maximum of three news articles, investigative stories or feature articles, written in either English or Filipino and published between October 1, 2011 to October 1, 2012.

The contest also requires an accompanying recommendation letter from editors or publishers.

Entries must be submitted personally or by mail to Lucia P. Tangi of University of the Philippines Diliman College of Mass Communication on or before October 1, 2012.

Awardees will be announced on December 10, 2012 to coincide with the International Human Rights Day at the UP College of Mass Communications Auditorium.

A cash prize of P10,000 and a trophy will be given to the winners.

The organizers said the Chit Estella Journalism Awards “are intended to keep alive Simbulan's ideals of excellent and principled journalism.”
