MANILA – Couples should be together for at least three years before getting engaged, a relationship expert advised on Monday.
“Sana bago mag-propose o mag-oo ka sa proposal, magkakilala na kayo ng mga three years nga,” Maribel Dionisio of Love Institute Philippines said in an interview on DZMM on Monday.
According to Dionisio, couples should invest on a long foundation of knowing each other before taking their relationship to the next level. She explained that couples can only get to know who their partners really are on the second year of the relationship.
“‘Yang unang taon, ‘yan ay bulag tayo – lahat ay maganda, lahat ay gwapo,” she said. “After a year, [diyan] lumalabas ang pagkatao.”
When determining the length of a relationship, Dionisio said to start at the boyfriend-girlfriend phase.
She also reminded couples to know their partners well before taling the plunge.
“Hindi pwede ang 'to follow' or 'when we get married' …Kung baga, made-to-order na dapat —it has to be in the bag,” she said.
If they find the right time and condition to tie the knot, Dionisio said this is an important first step to a happy marriage.
“Ang kapalit niyan, happiness," she said. Ibig sabihin, compatible din kayo.”
