MANILA -- ABS-CBN chairman Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III has accepted the ice bucket challenge which aims to raise funds for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) research.
In a video released Sunday, the Kapamilya network's top executive performed the challenge after being nominated by “TV Patrol” anchor Noli de Castro, among others.
Lopez then nominated rivals Felipe "Henry" Gozon of GMA-7 and Manny Pangilinan of TV5 to follow suit.
Since the campaign started in the US in July, a galaxy of celebrities and personalities have taken up the cause.
The viral craze was reported to have raised more than $100 million (over P4.3 billion) as of writing.
Among the personalities and celebrities who joined the cause were ABS-CBN president and chief executive officer Charo Santos-Concio, Justice Secretary Leila De Lima, Bureau of Internal Revenue Commissioner Kim Henares and celebrities Anne Curtis, Lea Salonga, Vice Ganda, and couples Angel Locsin and Luis Manzano.
While rules vary, the ice bucket challenge generally has participants recording themselves getting poured with ice water on the head. The video is supposed to be published online within 24 hours of being challenged.
Before getting drenched, a participant can tag other people to take up the challenge. Those who refuse to do the dare are expected to donate to the ALS Association in the United States, or any foundation pursuing research on the disease.
