MANILA – We all know that tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by bacteria that usually affect the lungs.
But did you know that here in the Philippines, more than 73 people are dying of the disease every day?
Here are some facts about the disease in the country, according to Quezon 4th district Rep. Angelina Tan, who filed a bill that mandates the Department of Health to develop a national plan to eliminate tuberculosis.
1. Tuberculosis is the sixth leading cause of death in the country, with 73 Filipinos dying from the disease every day.
2. An estimated 600,000 Filipinos have active tuberculosis, while 80% of them have latent TB.
3. The Philippines ranks ninth out of 196 countries with high cases of tuberculosis, according to the World Health Organization’s Global Tuberculosis of 2012 report.
Vitamin C shows promise in treating tuberculosis in laboratory models, according to a team from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.
But researchers are still not sure how far vitamin C can work for humans, citing that the discovery was made during a test tube study.
