MANILA, Philippines – Bangs Garcia is not just good at keeping viewers glued to their seats in ABS-CBN’s top-rating afternoon soap “Kung Ako’y Iiwan Mo.”
Garcia is also a talented painter, already having two exhibits, and even selling a P150,000 artwork, less than a year after taking lessons from Art dela Cruz.
In an interview with ABS-CBN News, the sexy actress said she has been drawing portraits ever since she was little.
“I joined poster-making contests in Ateneo de Davao,” she said. “I draw portraits, but I never put colors on it kahit crayons kasi baka masira.”
“As I got older, I became more open-minded. Why not put colors in my drawings?” she added.
According to Garcia, it was one of her celebrity friends, Viva Hot Babe member Sheree, who inspired her to get into painting.
A painter herself, Sheree referred the actress to dela Cruz, who happens to be the friend of her husband.
Garcia then shared her first lesson in painting in October last year.
“Nag-meeting muna kami sa Rockwell para mag-shopping ng painting materials. Kinakabahan ako kasi ‘di ko alam kung ano ang pipiliin ko, pero tinuruan niya ako,” she said.
“We started that same day sa bahay niya sa Makati,” she added. “Tinuruan niya ako, craypas on sandpaper para makita niya ako kung paano mag-combine ng colors.”
After a few more sessions, Garcia feels proud that her friends see her as an “expert” already. “Sobrang na-flatter ako. ‘Yung mga kaibigan ko hindi makapaniwala. I’m really proud of myself,” she said.
Garcia had her paintings displayed in an exhibit organized by fellow beauty queens. The actress won Miss Philippine Youth, a pageant organized by the Department of Education, in 2006.
Her win in the pageant eventually made her a youth ambassadress of the agency.
Among Garcia’s paintings are of a ginger-haired girl which she said symbolizes women empowerment, and a desert, inspired by her visit to Dubai while shooting “Kung Ako’y Iiwan Mo.”
“Wala pang one year ako nagpipinta at may second exhibit ako agad. May mga tao na lumalapit sa akin to be part of their group. Sobrang natutuwa ako na they appreciate my artwork,” she said.
