MANILA - The Philippines' bet to this year's Miss Universe, MJ Lastimosa, joined the social media phenomenon of getting poured with ice water to raise awareness of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS.
Lastimosa's video of her "ice bucket challenge," posted on Instagram on Friday, shows her taking up the dare in beauty-queen fashion.
The 26-year-old from North Cotabato looked pageant-ready with a formfitting green dress, full makeup and styled hair -- only to be drenched with water by her companion.
While rules vary, the ice bucket challenge generally has participants recording themselves getting poured with ice water on the head. The video is supposed to be published online within 24 hours of being challenged.
Before getting drenched, a participant can tag other people to take up the challenge. Those who refuse to do the dare are expected to donate to the ALS Association in the United States, or any foundation pursuing research on the disease.
However, as it has unfolded on social media, celebrities tagged to do the challenge still make significant donations despite agreeing to take up the dare.
According to Lastimosa, she was tagged by San Mig Coffee player Alex Mallari and a friend from Indonesia.
She passed on the challenge to her fellow Binibining Pilipinas 2014 winners -- Bianca Guidotti, Kris Janson, Yvethe Santiago, Parul Shah, Laura Lehman, Hannah Sison.
