MANILA, Philippines – The education arm of the ABS-CBN Foundation Inc. (AFI) was recognized in the 2012 Gawad Leardership and Innovations for Development Relevant to Science Education (Gawad LIDER) Awards for producing quality programs for the youth.

AFI’s E-media received the Exemplary Leadership Award in the Institution category along with Dr. Luis Rey Velasco, entomologist and former chancellor of the University of the Philippines-Los Baños, who was given the same award in the Individual category.

Department of Science and Tecnology Secretary Mario Montejo, Undersecretary Fortunato de la Peña, Science, Education Institute director Dr. Film Brawner and Senator Loren Legarda handed out the medals, certificates and a cash prize of P200,000 to the awardees in an awarding ceremony held recently.

“Their efforts are enormous in terms of its impact towards the field of research and educational attainment. They indeed brought science closer to the hearts of their constituents and audiences and these awards are given to them in recognition of their commitment to science education,” Brawner said in a statement.

“As we acknowledge exemplary leadership to improve S&T (science and technology) education, we are optimistic that the work done by the winners of the Gawad LIDER would inspire others to follow their footsteps and bring about development in the country through science education,” she added.

E-media is known for producing educational TV programs such as “Sineskwela,” “Mathtinik,” “Hirayamanawari,” “Bayani,” “Epol/Apple,” “Pahina,” “Silip,” “I Got It” and the radio show “Bago ‘Yan Ah!”

Velasco, on the other hand, has received several awards for his scientific research in agriculture and its related disciplines.
