MANILA - When former President Corazon "Cory" Aquino died, a home baker decided to make a sweet tribute the best way she knew how - baked and wrapped in a bow.
Mimi Ong, owner of Mimi Cakes, recently came up with limited-edition yellow cupcakes in honor of Aquino, who died on August 1.
She said she was asked by package manufacturer RM Boxes to make a cupcake tribute for the late president, an offer she could not refuse.
"Of course I said yes. From all the presidents that I know, she is the only president who is not corrupt, who thinks about the sake of her country. Tapat siya bilang isang pangulo ng ating bansa," Ong said in an e-mail sent to abs-cbnNEWS.com/Newsbreak.
The butter-flavored cupcake was topped with yellow royal icing and a candy flower in the shape of a Star Gazer Lily, which has special significance to the Aquino family.
The late president's daughter, Kris Aquino-Yap, said in an interview that one of her aunts, Tessie Aquino-Oreta, had a dream where late Sen. Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. said to bring some Star Gazers to Cory.
The color yellow is widely associated with Ninoy and Cory, who used it in clothing and campaign paraphernalia.
The yellow cupcakes were showcased at the RM Boxes exhibit at the recently concluded World Food Expo (WOFEX) from August 5 to 8 at the World Trade Center in Manila.
Each confection was wrapped in a bright yellow box and were stacked in tiers, accompanied by flags and ribbons saying "Maraming Salamat Pangulong Cory Aquino" and other messages of love and support.
All 40 "Cory cupcakes" were given away to a few lucky guests during the exhibit. Ong said the cupcakes are custom-made, and are available upon request through the Mimi Cakes website.
Ong, who started baking as a hobby, now has a modest clientele referred by friends and online customers. Her best sellers include brownies, her original ube bar, and butter cupcakes for birthdays and weddings.
She also makes specialty fondant and soft icing cakes in a variety of colorful designs. Report by Kristine Servando, abs-cbnNEWS.com/Newsbreak. Photos courtesy of Mimi Cakes.
