Shangri-La Plaza and the Embassy of Italy recently dazzled its patrons with cultural glam as it presented the global Italian film festival Moviemov with a red carpet welcome.

I enjoyed the company of the metro’s who's who as we welcomed this most anticipated international film festival held last July 23-27.

Italian Senator Hon. Gofreddo Bettini, Artistic Director of Playtown Roma, and Alfonso Tagliafferi, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Italy

The opening night started with a red carpet welcome as international stars, diplomats, socialites and people from the business community gathered to enjoy cocktails at the newly renovated East Wing of Shangri-La Plaza Mall.

VIP guests were then ushered to the Shang Cineplex to enjoy the opening film.

The film fest, "Moviemov 4: Italian Cinema Now," brought together some of the best of contemporary Italian cinema along with the classic works of famed Italian filmmaker Ettore Scola in his own showcase called Classic Retrospective.

We all enjoyed the movie screening of award-winning Turkish director (who lives in Italy) Ferzan Özpetek's "Allacciate Le Cincture" (Fasten Your Seatbelts). I liked how the love story "dramedy" was shot with picturesque tourist locations of old Lecce City.

According to reports, the film is Özpetek first film shot in digital format. It won 11 nominations in Italy's David di Donatello Cinema Awards.

Seasoned actress Paola Mirracionne, Egle in the film, graced the opening reception together with Italian star Eleanora Sergis.

Other films shown during the film-fest run were "La Dolce Vita" (The Sweet Life), "La Grande Bellezza"(The Great Beauty)

"La Dolce Vita" (The Sweet Life)

"La Dolce Vita," is a classic masterpiece that won the Palme d'Or (Golden Palm) at the 1960 Cannes Film Festival and an Oscar for Best Costume.

It's a moving meditation on "the sweet life" (English Translation of its title) set against the exquisite sights of Rome.

"La Grande Bellezza"(The Great Beauty)

La Grande Bellezza (The Great Beauty) is the most recent winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, which chronicles the musings of socialite Jep Gambardella on his life and the city of Rome.

According to Ambassador of Italy to the Philippines Massimo Roscigno, "Italy and the Philippines enjoy close friendship and interpersonal ties... I believe that culture is one of the main factors that contribute to this."

Congrats to Moviemov 4! Evviva la felicità di salute di amicizia pace e prosperità!
